Alexandra Carioti is a dancer, mover, artistic visionary, and a passionate scientist. Her passion for art is driven through the action of inspiration and bridging universal experiences among people. Carioti is a firm believer that the English language is extremely limiting. She is convinced that art is a language of its own that can accurately describe experiences and emotions that cannot be verbally expressed. As a psychologist, Alexandra combines art and science using her knowledge and passion about the human body and human experience. This combination can be seen in her most recent work titled, “Proprioception”. In this piece, Alexandra explores the relationship between the five senses and what happens to the body when a dominating sense such as vision, is taken away.
Alexandra’s first love of movement was found in the structure of ballet as she began her training at the prestigious Washington School of Ballet. There, she was trained in contemporary, modern (including Taylor, Horton, and Muller), ballet (predominantly Vaganova and Balanchine), and flamenco. At a young age, she found immense healing within movement as she fought with severe ADHD. Alexandra found relief within the structure of ballet and the experimentation found in modern and contemporary.
Alexandra has demonstrated her innate passion for performance throughout her student years as she has regularly appeared in a variety of shows. She has worked extensively with various projects held at the Kennedy Center. These works include Septime Webre’s “ALICE” in wonderland and The Washington Ballet’s “Sleeping Beauty” produced by Julie Kent. Through these projects, Carioti has appeared in various media including “Cream” Magazine and the “Washington Post” to name a few. Carioti has also developed her talent for staging large scale productions as she has been held responsible for organizing and choreographing over 200 students for performances such as The Washington School of Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”. Now a graduate of the school, Alexandra has continued to perform and work with other companies such as American Ballet Theater, the Royal Ballet, that the Washington Ballet company.
Alexandra now resides in Baltimore. She is currently a student at The Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory, Alexandra is working towards receiving a BFA in dance as well as a minor in psychology. At Hopkins, Carioti has developed a love for combining dance production with digital production. She has participated and submitted into a variety of community-based Baltimore festivals. These festivals include Baltimore’s “Cease Fire” festival and the “Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival”. Carioti uses her knowledge of psychology and anatomy to further experiment with future projects. Alexandra ultimately describes her work as sensory and cognitively stimulating, elegant, and satisfying.
